Celebrating Advent

Yesterday at church (and in the Colee home) we began the celebration of Advent.

Isaiah 40:3

New King James Version (NKJV)

3 The voice of one crying in the wilderness:

"Prepare the way of the LORD;
Make straight in the desert
A highway for our God."

It is my prayer that even in the "craziness" of our next two week's schedule we will be able to stop daily and thank God for the precious gift of His son. I know that I am thankful for the opportunity to spend every day in room 605 with the Class of 2014.

Schedule for next week

We often take for granted the very things that most deserve our gratitude.

Cynthia Ozick

Isn't that the unfortunate truth? It is easy to get consumed by our daily lives and we often forget to stop and be grateful for things that are fundamental...faith, freedom, health...the list goes on! I pray today that we will all be thankful (and voice our thankfulness) for the things we often overlook. (Yes, I am preaching to myself!)

We have had an excellent week in Sophomore English. Last week the students were assigned and completed a Research project about different world literature authors. This week, along with other assignments, they presented their findings to the class in a Keynote presentation. I limited their research to reference material in our library. When writing research papers one must be able to adeptly use internet sources as well as printed material. It was an excellent project and the students always amaze me at their creativity and boldness!

As we look at the next few weeks ask your student to see the class calendar. It gives an accurate picture of what's ahead! Enjoy the long weekend!

Flexibility is key!

I wanted to let you know a few things about next week. The "moved" Vocab Unit 1 test is Monday. I had said that the AR book would be due on Monday, the 10th, without realizing that is a holiday. With testing and the field trip the following week, I need to move the AR date to Friday, Oct. 7th. The students are aware of this. They should read an AR book from their "zone" and take a test on it in the library. Ms. Hastey will provide me with a list that afternoon.

The Magazine Sale is over! Of course, we will still be taking online orders throughout the school year. We made about $2,600, so we are obviously short of our $4,000 goal. For those of you who participated, thank you! If you didn't have a chance to order magazines, feel free to do so. If not, would you consider making a donation towards the class fund? Please email me at ccolee@trinitywildcats.com with questions. I can always have your account billed! The goal was for every student to "net" about $50.

Another issue...on Thursday, October 13th, we will be seeing "Dracula" at the ASF. I am in need of some parents to drive. Some of your students are already driving, and they may drive themselves. However, that only accounts for some of the class. Please email me if you would be willing to help out!

So....here is what I have on the schedule for next week.

College Prep
Monday-Vocab Test
Tuesday-sentence patterns
Wednesday-sentence patterns
Thursday-Expository essays/PSAT review
Friday-AR due/PSAT review

Honors
Monday-Vocab Test
Tuesday-new book introduced/Expository essays
Wednesday-review Expository essays
Thursday-PSAT review
Friday-AR due/PSAT review

Hope you have a great weekend!

Change in plans!

I just wanted to let you know asap that I have shifted our plans a bit for the week. Due to two Activity schedules and a project that will take 2 days instead of 1, I am moving the Alas, Babylon test to Friday and the Vocab Unit 1 Test to Monday. Sorry for any confusion...please email me if you need further explanation.

Thanks,
Christy Colee

Plans for next week

Thank you for your participation in the Magazine Sale! We have raised about $2,500 and I think that is a good start on our goal of $4,000. Several students asked if they could turn in orders until Monday, and of course, I agreed. On Tuesday I will ask if any students who did not participate in the sale if their parents would like to make a donation towards our cause. Please let your child know if you would be willing to do so. We will continue to take orders on-line. Be looking in the spring for more information regarding another fund raiser.

One date that I wanted to make you aware of is that the students AR Test is due by October 10th. They know that they are to read one book and take a quiz on it. I will get a print out from the library on the morning of the 11th.

It's Friday...again!

"Show me your ways, O LORD, teach me your paths; guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Saviour, and my hope is in you all day long. Remember, O LORD, your great mercy and love, for they are from of old. Remember not the sins of my youth and my rebellious ways; according to your love remember me, for you are good, O LORD."
Psalm 25:4-7

Having past the mid-9 weeks point I am once again reminded how fast time flies! Again, I am enjoying getting to know each student, and we are working quickly through our semester's goals.

We have been learning sentence patterns to use in our writing. This is one thing that the ACT evaluates on the writing portion of the test (varied sentence structure). The students have been learning different ways to express themselves using the different patterns. We will finish learning through the first eight patterns this week and will have a test over 1-8 next week.

Also, the Magazine Sale is going great! Thank you for your support thus far. The next "turn in" day will be Wednesday, September 14th. The students will qualify for a "money pen" or more "ducks"...ask them about the ducks!!! We are asking each sophomore family to sell at least 10 subscriptions. This will ensure that we meet our goal for fund-raising!

Lastly, Mr. Yohn and Coach Cleveland introduced to the students a new program called "Talk about It" and we all registered this week. You should have received an email regarding this program, and if not, please contact me.

As always, feel free to contact me with any questions or comments...I love hearing from you!
Thanks,
CColee

Wednesday is DUCKY DAY!!

Please remember that Wednesday, September 7th, is the first "turn in" day for the Magazine Sale. For every 2 orders your students can choose another "ducky"...ask them...they know what I am talking about! If you have orders on qsp.com I will get them from the site!

Thanks for your support! We are on our way!

Thank you for allowing me the privilege of teaching your child!
CColee

BTW...We kicked off the MAGAZINE SALE yesterday! Your student should have brought home a packet. You should have also received several emails from me this week regarding the sale. We are going to sell these magazines (on-line is fine, you must register your child to receive credit) for the next 3 weeks. We would like for each sophomore to be responsible for selling 10 magazine subscriptions. Please do not hesitate to email or call me with any questions or concerns...ccolee@trinitywildcats.com

Plans for week of 08/29/11-09/02/11

This will be a busy week in Sophomore English!

Today we are hearing from Mrs. Mosley, our College Counselor. Students are using "Naviance", a computer planning tool for students as they begin the college research process. Today they are taking a personality and career interest inventory. This incredible tool allows them to eventually enter test scores and helps the students research colleges that might be a good fit for them based on the information given. Parents are welcome to view this information at any time and will eventually be given a copy of the score.

Every Monday I plan to post our plans for the upcoming week. Obviously these plans are subject to change. Your student can keep you up to date on any changes.

College Prep

Thanks for your overwhelming positive support from PTO night. I enjoyed meeting you and hope you will feel free to contact me anytime...ccolee@trinitywildcats.com.

First edline posting...

Dear Parents,

First let me say how much I have enjoyed getting to know your students! They are bright and respectful...we are off to a fabulous start!

Please do not be alarmed if your student's average is not where it normally is, or you think it should be. I am on the point system, as you know, and with so few grades posted the average is sometimes misleading. The Sentence Pattern Essay was returned today and the students have the opportunity to "earn" points back by re-writing. This will be due Tuesday.

I am hopeful you will choose to come to PTO Open House tomorrow night, August 23rd. I have some important things to discuss with you. If you are unable to attend, please email me and I will get you caught up!

Again, I am looking forward to a great year!
Sincerely,
Christy Colee
